The government of Hong Kong has issued an apology over its handling of a controversial extradition bill after hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in protest on Sunday.
The territory’s chief executive Carrie Lam said she apologised to the public with “utmost sincerity and humility” over the proposed legislation that would allow people to be sent to mainland China for trial.
Dressed in black, pro-democracy demonstrators shouted “withdraw” and “resign” as they marched from Victoria Park towards the downtown district where government headquarters are located.
