While early travel tended to be slower, more dangerous, and more dominated by trade and migration, cultural and technological advances over many years have tended to mean that travel has become easier and more accessible.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Mankind has come a long way in transportation since\u00a0Christopher Columbus\u00a0sailed to the new world from Spain in 1492, an expedition which took over 10 weeks to arrive at the final destination; to the 21st century where\u00a0aircraft\u00a0allow travel from Spain to the United States overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Travel in the\u00a0Middle Ages\u00a0offered hardships and challenges, however, it was important to the economy and to society. The\u00a0wholesale sector\u00a0depended (for example) on\u00a0merchants\u00a0dealing with\/through\u00a0caravans\u00a0or sea-voyagers, end-user\u00a0retailing\u00a0often demanded the services of many itinerant\u00a0peddlers\u00a0wandering from village to hamlet,\u00a0gyrovagues\u00a0(Wandering Monks) and wandering\u00a0friars\u00a0brought\u00a0theology\u00a0and\u00a0pastoral support\u00a0to neglected areas,\u00a0travelling minstrels\u00a0practiced the never-ending tour, and armies ranged far and wide in various crusades and in sundry other wars.<sup id=\"cite_ref-matador_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Pilgrimages were common in both the European and Islamic world and involved streams of travellers both locally (Canterbury Tales-style) and internationally.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Travel dates back to\u00a0antiquity\u00a0where wealthy Greeks and Romans would travel for leisure to their summer homes and villas in cities such as\u00a0Pompeii\u00a0and\u00a0Baiae.
